UK managed IT providers compared: a 2026 buyer’s guide

Written by Managed247. We are one of the providers in this market, so this guide does not rank anyone. It sets out the criteria we believe buyers should use, shows how Managed247 measures up against each one, and gives neutral questions to put to every provider on your shortlist, including us.

Choosing a managed IT provider is one of the longest commitments a UK organisation makes about its technology. Most contracts run for several years, and switching is disruptive if it is not planned. Yet most shortlists are built from a handful of websites that all make similar promises. This guide gives you a consistent way to compare them.

The eight criteria that matter

CriterionWhy it mattersQuestion to ask every provider
Where the service desk is basedOnshore support keeps your data and your conversations in the UK, and avoids handoffs across time zones. Is every engineer who handles our tickets based in the UK?
Genuine 24/7 coverMany problems happen out of hours. An answering service that logs a ticket for the morning is not the same as an engineer who fixes it.Is 24/7 cover included as standard, and is the desk staffed by engineers at 3am?
Security certifications you can evidenceCertifications show that a provider’s own house is in order before it looks after yours.Which certifications do you hold, and can you share the current certificates?
One contract across IT, cloud and securitySeparate suppliers for support, cloud and security create gaps and finger-pointing when something goes wrong. Are managed IT, cloud, Microsoft 365 and cyber security all covered under one contract and one team?
Multi-cloud capabilityMost organisations now run more than one cloud platform, or will do soon.Which of Azure, AWS and Google Cloud do you support, and at what level of certification?
Proactive monitoringThe best support is the ticket that never needs raising. Is monitoring proactive, and does it fix common issues automatically before users notice?
Customer satisfaction you can verifyEvery provider says its customers are happy. Scores and independent reviews show it.What is your current NPS or CSAT score, and where can we read independent reviews?
A managed, low-risk transitionThe move between providers is where most of the risk sits. How do you run the transition, and will you run in parallel with our current provider?

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I choose a managed IT provider in the UK?

Start with the criteria that matter most to your organisation, such as UK-based delivery, 24/7 cover, security certifications and cloud capability. Then put the same questions to every provider on your shortlist, and ask for evidence rather than promises: certificates, satisfaction scores and independent reviews.

  • What should a managed IT service include?

At a minimum, a service desk for your users, proactive monitoring and maintenance, and security patching. Most organisations also need cloud and Microsoft 365 management, cyber security, and access to IT strategy and project expertise. Check which of these are included as standard and which are extras.

  • How are managed IT services usually priced in the UK?

Most providers charge a monthly fee based on the number of users or devices and the services included. Because the scope varies so much, ask each provider for a like-for-like quote against the same list of services and service levels.

  • Is this guide independent?

No, and we say so at the top. Managed247 wrote it, and we are one of the providers in this market. That is why the guide does not rank anyone, and why every question in it applies to us as much as to anyone else.

  • How long does it take to switch managed IT provider?

Most organisations move in weeks, not months, when the transition is planned properly and runs in parallel with the current provider. Read more about switching IT provider.
